Pulsant, the UK data centre and digital infrastructure platform, has unveiled a £1 million investment in its Birmingham data centre to support future demand for AI in the UK's second city. Infrastructure upgrades to the 2,405 square metre facility, acquired from Specialist Computer Centres PLC last year, will support the surge in advanced computing.
The site, five miles southeast of Birmingham city centre, has been fully integrated into Pulsant's UK-wide Edge infrastructure platform, which interconnects 14 regional data centres from Edinburgh to Fareham on the South Coast, giving local businesses access to more than 1,600 technology providers, including international carriers. Recent Pulsant research, covered separately, found the Midlands was the most data confident UK region, with more than 60% of Midlands businesses expecting significant technology investment increases within two years, against a national average of 47%.
The investment also includes upgraded security and a full refurbishment to improve conditions for people working in the data centre, both from Pulsant and regional businesses that keep their own infrastructure on site. Pulsant worked with fibre network provider Zayo Europe to connect the Birmingham site into its nationwide platform, removing dependence on routing traffic through London.
Rob Coupland, CEO of Pulsant, said: "We're investing in our data centres to meet the urgent need for ultra-low latency, sovereign, compute power across the UK. Businesses can move, store and process their data securely close to where they're based, rather than relying on public internet or routing through increasingly constrained London." Colman Deegan, CEO of Zayo Europe, added: "By plugging the facility directly into our national backbone, we're removing the infrastructure guesswork for Midlands businesses."
The structural driver is the concentration of UK digital infrastructure in London, which is pushing regional operators to build direct fibre connections into national backbones rather than relying on capital-routed traffic for AI inference workloads.
For the sector, this reflects growing investment in regional edge data centres as AI adoption drives demand for lower-latency, sovereign compute capacity outside traditional infrastructure hubs.
